Tusam Valley Trekking is one of the hidden valley treks in Nepal, located in the Gorkha region near the Manaslu border with Tibet. This isolated gem, known as Shangri-La Valley, was opened for trekking in 2008. It remains relatively untouched, featuring ancient villages and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries waiting to be explored.
During the trek, you can expect to walk for about 5-6 hours each day, reaching a high point of 3,500 meters at Mu Gompa, the largest monastery in the valley. Accommodations during the Tsum Valley trek include lodges and traditional homestays, allowing for a more immersive experience rather than camping in tents.
We have several overnight accommodation options to choose from: homestay, lodge, or tent.
The village in the Tsum Valley is quite undeveloped, but you can experience their unique hospitality. The locals are friendly and welcome you with traditional hospitality at home. While accommodations may be basic, you can expect to enjoy local meals such as Dal Bhat, Tibetan bread, and local soup.
While trekking in the Tsum Valley, you will learn how the valley got its name, which means “vivid.” It is home to the direct descendants of the Tibetan people known as the Tsumbas.
Many people choose to do the Tsum and Manaslu treks simultaneously, as both begin from Sotikhola village near Harughat Bazaar and involve a 3-4 day walk. After three days, trekkers have the option to take a different route, making it convenient for tourists who have extra time after exploring the Tsum Valley to continue to the Manaslu trek. After some time in Manaslu, they can also head to the Annapurna region. The decision ultimately depends on your holiday schedule or itinerary.
Trekking in the Tsum Valley is best enjoyed during autumn, spring, and winter. You can trek any day during these seasons. However, trekking is not advisable during the monsoon, as heavy rains can cause numerous landslides.
